US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay amid the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - among the peak after the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airfield in the country, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the US.

Strain on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It led several flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after thirty-five days.
