One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, announced how he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Parent Company

The recent development escalates the continuing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

The co-founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company against "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Solidarity

The entrepreneur revealed via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus additional components.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Historical Activism and Recent Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.

The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions

Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company in September, following decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
