Hurricane Melissa is forecast to become a uncommon category five storm as it shifts in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing dangerous sudden floods and rock falls.

The cyclone, which had winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering northwest in the Caribbean and is anticipated to hit the coast by Tuesday, based on data from weather experts.

Advisories of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been announced as Melissa brings up to 76cm of rain and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," locals have been advised.

The cyclone is the thirteenth cyclone in this year's Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in late autumn.

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with sand barriers and plywood sheets, and to accumulate basic necessities.

Advisories are also ongoing for parts of Haiti including the main city, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is projected to bring comparable impacts by the midweek period.

Mudslides currently triggered by the cyclone have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

This weather system is predicted to pass over Cuba by midweek before moving through the Antillas Mayores and out into the open ocean.
