Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, according to a statement.
A school employee was lost their life while safeguarding the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The incident in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis troubling the locality, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they anticipate and pray for their children's secure homecoming.
