A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the forty-year-old presenter was confronted by three individuals, with one began shooting at him before running away.

The purpose of the incident is unknown and no arrests are in custody, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Police said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a premises near the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the property supervising the setup of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the man was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but collapsed across the street.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.

Appeal for Witnesses

Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and investigators have been tracking them to establish their whereabouts," added an official.

Family and Public Reaction

His family member, a close relative, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a profound tragedy."

She requested the public to refrain from sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's young family.

In a statement, the broadcaster he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, kindness and quick humor, adding that his influence "will live on".
