The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the writers are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
