The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
