The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, not a single part of California is facing water scarcity. This milestone follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened fire dangers and pressured its enormous farming industry.

A Chart Shows Zero Drought

A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that all of California is without drought or abnormal dryness. This change came after a period of heavy precipitation that replenished major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes far beyond their typical levels.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

The path to this point featured intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, causing extensive inundation, blackouts, and deaths. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed unusually parched. Heavy rains at the beginning of January eliminated those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

However, hydrologists note that the end of drought status does not mean complete water security. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which provides about a third of the state's water as it runs off, is a key piece for future water availability. State experts have emphasized that it is too early to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, attention turns to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health for the coming seasons.
