The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
