The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
