"When are you chatting with the band?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of celebrated fans have openly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to make music."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

But Haim will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
