US Armed Forces Conducts Lethal Strike in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in Four Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking military official, the US military carried out a fatal kinetic engagement on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a deadly attack on a craft operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Background and Recent Actions
The statement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to increase the military presence.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Actions Amidst Scrutiny
The government has encountered increasing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.
Although the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official seemed to confirm a wider political aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
